Frequently asked questions

What is an isolating diaphragm gauge (diaphragm seal) and why is it used?

A diaphragm seal assembly separates the process medium from the pressure gauge's Bourdon tube by interposing a thin, flexible metal diaphragm. Process pressure deflects the diaphragm, which transmits pressure through a fill fluid (silicone oil, glycerine) to the Bourdon tube. The gauge wetted parts never contact the process medium — allowing corrosive, viscous, crystallising, or contaminated media to be measured safely.

What diaphragm materials are available and which should I choose?

316L SS (most chemical media), Hastelloy C-276 (mixed acids, chlorinated media, wet HCl), tantalum (concentrated mineral acids including HF and HCl at all concentrations), PTFE-lined (HF, strong oxidisers). Select based on chemical resistance data — contact engineering for mixed-acid or uncommon solvent service.

What fill fluid should I specify?

Silicone oil (standard): compatible with most media, −40 °C to +200 °C. Glycerine: food-grade alternative, −20 °C to +120 °C. Halocarbon oil: oxygen and chlorine service (non-flammable). PFPE (e.g. Galden): aggressive fluorochemicals, concentrated oxidisers. Specify fill fluid at order — changing fill fluid in the field requires complete disassembly and re-filling.

What is the maximum pressure ZX-04 can handle?

The diaphragm seal assembly is rated to 60 MPa (600 bar) with an appropriate Bourdon tube gauge. High-pressure versions use thick-wall diaphragm construction with a hardstop at 2× FS to prevent diaphragm rupture. Confirm with engineering for pressures above 40 MPa.

Can ZX-04 be used on steam lines?

Yes, with silicone oil fill (rated to +200 °C). For saturated steam above 150 °C, glycerine fill is not suitable — use silicone oil. The diaphragm seal eliminates the need for a siphon pot, which is one of its main advantages on steam lines.

How does a diaphragm seal affect gauge accuracy?

A small accuracy reduction occurs due to the capsule stiffness and fill-fluid compressibility adding to the gauge's total error. Typical system accuracy (seal + gauge) is Class 1.6. For high-accuracy requirements, specify a Class 1.0 gauge to achieve a combined system Class 1.6.

Can ZX-04 be used with electronic pressure transmitters?

Yes. The glycerine- or silicone-filled diaphragm seal can be coupled to an electronic pressure transmitter instead of a Bourdon-tube gauge. This is common in process control applications where both a local indication (gauge) and a 4–20 mA output (transmitter) are required at the same process connection.

How is ZX-04 cleaned for food and pharmaceutical service?

For sanitary service: the diaphragm contact surface is electropolished to Ra ≤ 0.8 µm. CIP-compatible elastomers (EPDM for NaOH/HNO₃ cleaning, Viton for SIP steam to 135 °C) are specified at order. The fill fluid does not contact the process — only the diaphragm surface requires sanitary compliance.

What connection options are available for the process side?

Threaded: G1/2, G1, G1½, G2, NPT 1/2", NPT 1". Flanged: DIN 2501 (PN10–PN400), ASME B16.5 (150#–2500#). Hygienic: DIN 11851, DIN 11864 (aseptic), SMS, RJT, BS 4825. Sanitary tri-clamp (ISO 2852). Specify connection standard, size, and pressure rating at order.

What is the lead time for ZX-04 diaphragm seal assemblies?

Standard assemblies (316L diaphragm, silicone fill, threaded connection): 7–14 business days. Hastelloy or tantalum diaphragm: 15–25 business days. Flanged assemblies with ASME or DIN certification: 20–30 business days. Rush production available on request.
